چکیده
[1] Global observations of electron density profiles from the COSMIC satellites are used to investigate, for the first time, the altitudinal dependence of the ionospheric response to the recurrent geomagnetic activity at different latitudinal regions during the extreme solar minimum period of 2008. Our results show that the 9-day oscillations in NmF2 are out of phase with those in Kp at high latitudes, whereas they are in phase at low-middle latitudes. This is consistent with changes in neutral composition associated with the recurrent geomagnetic activity. Meanwhile, the 9-day perturbations in the hmF2 and the thickness parameter (HT) exhibit good correspondence with the perturbations in Kp from pole to pole, suggesting that the ionospheric response is global and undergoes periodic expansion/contraction. Further, the ionospheric response to the recurrent geomagnetic activity strongly depends on altitude. The density perturbations are generally in phase with Kp above the F2 peak, while they are out of phase around the F2 peak at high latitudes. These changes in electron density at different altitudes are explained by different physical processes, such as photoionization-chemistry, particle precipitation, and dynamic and diffusion transport. Investigation of the effects of geomagnetic storms on ionospheric irregularities using the combination of ground-based GNSS and SWARM satellites
Geomagnetic storms are one of the main causes of ionospheric perturbations in different sizes, depending on their intensity, which could disturb radio signals passing through this medium. On September 6-12, 2017, the sudden storm commencement (SSC) was the most massive geomagnetic storm of the year due to the X9 solar flare caused by a coronal mass ejection (CME). IMF-Bz and Dst values increase...

Global positioning system scintillation and total electron content (TEC) data have been collected by ten specialized GPS Ionospheric Scintillation and TEC Monitors (GISTMs) of the Canadian High Arctic Ionospheric Network (CHAIN). The phase scintillation index σ8 is obtained from the phase of the L1 signal sampled at 50 Hz. Maps of phase scintillation occurrence as a function of the altitude-adj...
متن کاملThe effect of background conditions on the ionospheric response to solar flares
The ionospheric response to two X5 solar flares that occurred in different seasons was investigated using the global ionosphere-thermosphere model. Two questions were investigated: (a) how do different solar flares with similar X-ray peak intensities disturb the ionosphere during the same background and driving conditions? and (b) how do the geomagnetic field and season affect the ionospheric r...
متن کاملSearch for magnetically quiet CHAMP polar passes and the characteristics of ionospheric currents during the dark season
The magnetic activity at auroral latitudes is strongly dependent on season. During the dark season, when the solar zenith angle in the polar region is larger than 100 at all local times, the ionospheric conductivity is much reduced, and generally low activity is encountered. These time intervals are of special interest for the main field modelling, because then the geomagnetic field readings, i...
متن کاملIonospheric climatology and variability from long-term and multiple incoherent scatter radar observations: variability
Long-term incoherent scatter radar (ISR) observations are used to study ionospheric variability for two midlatitude sites, Millstone Hill and St. Santin. This work is based on our prior efforts which resulted in an empirical model system, ISR Ionospheric Model (ISRIM), of climatology (and now variability) of the ionosphere. We assume that the variability can be expressed in three terms, the bac...
